The practically consistent affirmation of the 2,000 understudies of Glenbard West High School. We pronounce our freedom from any schoolwork; we will no more endure its treachery. When over the span of educational occasions, it gets important to end certain incapable practices that have constrained the extra-curricular exercises of the understudy bodies, we, the understudies are compelled to revolt against these practices, and rebel for more prominent's benefit of humankind. I, consequently, have been decided to pass on to the workforce the reasons to end the training, and in doing as such to legitimize the pending resistance. Schoolwork causes undue worry at an early age, prompting sudden passing of numerous understudies. It has restricted the time that understudies need to work, partake in extra-curricular exercises, and besides it makes a less amicable understudy educator relationship, in this way causing between close to home pressure. Schoolwork causes by and large aversion of the educational system by understudies. Uncompleted schoolwork powers numerous understudies to miss undue sums of school so as to complete unimaginable outstanding tasks at hand appointed by instructors. It powers understudies to accomplish dull work, regardless of whether they as of now comprehend the topic. The idea of schoolwork is so imbued into the brains of instructors that they don't see that it is even terrible from their imminent. Doling out schoolwork implies that an educator must burn through significant class time going over it at the point when they could be addressing and showing the topic just as viably. In the instances of bigger schoolwork assignments, instructors burn through their significant time reviewing it. Schoolwork adds to an effectively over the top measure of time spent on instruction of youthful America. The realities of the issue are that numerous individuals who are self-taught spend from one to two hours on school work a day furthermore, still regularly end up in front of those in the government funded school framework. In view of this reality, shouldn't a seven-hour school day be sufficiently long to do whatever learning we have to do? By any stretch of the imagination times during our school vocations, we have fought commonly the foul play of schoolwork. Be that as it may, the staff and the state legislators have not even once tuned in to our requests for no schoolwork. We have had petitions, and we have introduced contentions to instructors, yet without much of any result. In light of the above realities, we the understudies of Glenbard West High School are compelled to defy the very idea of schoolwork, except if you, the workforce, put without hesitation a change of arrangement in regards to schoolwork right away. So, he called up a friend from high school, who happens to be a pre-med (DING!) at Harvard (DING!) who recommended the ancient Chinese secret (double DING!) of dissolving salt in hot water to make a solution strong enough to taste, then snorting said solution up your nose. Fortunately, prior to subjecting himself to this remedy, Jeremy came to me to ask if it had any scientific merit from the perspective of a chemical engineer. Well, if you snort a salt solution up your nose, I guess, by osmosis, the cells of your nose should lose water to the higher-concentration salt solution, which might then dissolve whatevers blocking your nose. Apparently this was a satisfactory explanation for Jeremy: Imagine what happens to the foul cocktail of snot, mucus and salty water goes after it passes through your nose. Better yet, dont. Although Jeremy did say that his nasal passages were instantly cleared after this treatment, its still something Im not too anxious to try anytime soon. Still, its better than Mitras proposed cure for the same ailment, which she forced upon our other suitemate Gabe 08, also suffering from terrible congestion. pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-5993103144631165482020-05-23T16:16:00.001-07:002020-05-23T16:16:03.279-07:00Lines of Longitude in Geography Longitude is the angular distance of any point on Earth measured east or west of a point on Earths surface. Where Is Zero Degrees Longitude? Unlike latitude, there is no easy point of reference such as the equator to be designated as zero degrees in the longitude system. To avoid confusion, the worlds nations have agreed that the Prime Meridian, which passes through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, will serve as that reference point and be designated as zero degrees. Because of this designation, longitude is measured in degrees west or east of the Prime Meridian. For example, 30à °E, the line passing through eastern Africa, is an angular distance of 30à ° east of the Prime Meridian. 30à °W, which is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is an angular distance of 30à ° west of the Prime Meridian. There are 180 degrees east of the Prime Meridian and coordinates are sometimes given without the designation of E or east. When this is used, a positive value represents coordinates east of the Prime Meridian. There are also 180 degrees west of the Prime Meridian and when W or west is omitted in a coordinate a negative value such as -30à ° represents coordinates west of the Prime Meridian. The 180à ° line is neither east nor west and approximates the International Date Line. On a map (diagram), lines of longitude are the vertical lines running from the North Pole to the South Pole and are perpendicular to lines of latitude. Every line of longitude also crosses the equator. Because longitude lines are not parallel, they are known as meridians. Like parallels, meridians name the specific line and indicate the distance east or west of a 0à ° line. Meridians converge at the poles and are farthest apart at the equator (about 69 miles (111 km) apart). Development and History of Longitude For centuries, mariners and explorers worked to determine their longitude in an effort to make navigation easier. Latitude was determined easily by observing the inclination of the sun or the position of known stars in the sky and calculating the angular distance from the horizon to them. Longitude could not be determined in this way because Earths rotation constantly changes the position of stars and the sun. The first person to offer a method for measuring longitude was the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. In the late 1400s, he began measuring and comparing the positions of the moon and Mars with their predicted positions over several nights at the same time (diagram). In his measurements, Vespucci calculated the angle between his location, the moon, and Mars. By doing this, Vespucci got a rough estimate of longitude. This method did not become widely used however because it relied on a specific astronomical event. Observers also needed to know the specific time and measure the moon and Mars positions on a stable viewing platform- both of which were difficult to do at sea. In the early 1600s, a new idea to measure longitude was developed when Galileo determined that it could be measured with two clocks. He said that any point on Earth took 24 hours to travel the full 360à ° rotation of Earth. He found that if you divide 360à ° by 24 hours, you find that a point on Earth travels 15à ° of longitude every hour. Therefore, with an accurate clock at sea, a comparison of two clocks would determine longitude. One clock would be at the home port and the other on the ship. The clock on the ship would need to be reset to local noon each day. The time difference would then indicate the longitudinal difference traveled as one hour represented a 15à ° change in longitude. Shortly thereafter, there were several attempts to make a clock that could accurately tell time on the unstable deck of a ship. In 1728, clockmaker John Harrison began working on the problem and in 1760, he produced the first marine chronometer called Number 4. In 1761, the chronometer was tested and determined to be accurate, officially making it possible to measure longitude on land and at sea. Measuring Longitude Today Today, longitude is more accurately measured with atomic clocks and satellites. The Earth is still divided equally into 360à ° of longitude with 180à ° being east of the Prime Meridian and 180à ° west. Longitudinal coordinates are divided into degrees, minutes and seconds with 60 minutes making up a degree and 60 seconds comprising a minute. For example, Beijing, Chinas longitude is 116à °2330E. The 116à ° indicates that it lies near the 116th meridian while the minutes and seconds indicate just how close it is to that line. The E indicates that it is that distance east of the Prime Meridian. Although less common, longitude can also be written in decimal degrees. Beijings location in this format is 116.391à °. In addition to the Prime Meridian, which is the 0à ° mark in todays longitudinal system, the International Date Line is also an important marker. It is the 180à ° meridian on the opposite side of the Earth and is where the eastern and western hemispheres meet. It also marks the place where each day officially begins. At the International Date Line, the west side of the line is always one day ahead of the east side, no matter what time of day it is when the line is crossed. This is because the Earth rotates east on its axis. Longitude and Latitude Lines of longitude or meridians are the vertical lines running from the South Pole to the North Pole. Lines of latitude or parallels are the horizontal lines running from the west to the east. The two cross each other at perpendicular angles and when combined as a set of coordinates they are extremely accurate in locating places on the globe. They are so accurate that they can locate cities and even buildings to within inches. For example, the Taj Mahal, located in Agra, India, has a coordinate set of 27à °1029N, 78à °232E. An IT leader has the responsibility to achieve good role models who can empower the staff me mbers in order to achieve higher standards. In the last few years, many transformational changes are taken place in technology. As for example, the development of computing technology by Apple, Intel was the transformational events that are taken place. Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple transformed their business processes through the software applications as well as high-speed microprocessors. At Apple, Steve Jobs is seen as a leader who has an idealistic vision to provide computers as a tool to change the world (Davenport 2014). Jobs were passionate about the company as well as enthusiastic about the announcements of products. Figure 1: Transformational Leadership Style (Source: Minavand 2013, pp-47) Transactional Leadership Style Apart from this leadership style, another type of style is transactional leadership that focuses on the exchange, which occurs between the leaders as well as followers. The leader can have a concern with maintaining the normal flow of the business operations (Minelle 2014). The IT providers should have required integration capabilities, but the leader does managing the information. Improve the technology vendor management capabilities: Technology vendors can double contract value when they are circumventing to the IT. The IT business leaders can also look in order to corporate IT for guidance as well as support with the vendor negotiations (Antonakis and House 2014). Conclusion It is concluded that the IT leader must be self-achiever, and they are motivated to become a proactive leader. Rapid change in the technology produces a chaos situation of the leader, and they must be ready to cope up with the technological change. In this report, two types of leaders are used such as a transactional style of leaders such as they used to motivate through the system of rewards as well as penalties. The managers use this style and it is focused on the basic management process to control, organize as well as do short-term planning. The leader can act as indicated by the necessities and prerequisites of their clients and offers with better IT administration delivery. As a transformational leadership style, the leader is engaged to build the adequacy of the Association. This style of initiative anxieties that the leader comprehends and additionally adjusts to the followers thought processes and necessities. The transformational leadership inspires the followers by raising consciousness about the predefined values and inspires the supporters to address the high state of individual needs. Therefore, these two types of leadership style are to be in an IT business leader. References Ali Shurbagi, A., 2014. It inspects the traffic during a network communication and blocks or permits passage depending on a given set of rules. The term Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) refers to both Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Deployment of Firewall and Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Intrusion Detection is a process of monitoring the activities occurring in a computer network and determining if they are in violation of standard security policies. The software that automatically carries out the process is known as IDS. IPS is able to carry out the intrusion detection process and can try to stop the intrusion/violation (Scarfone Mell, 2007). Various firewall arrangements can be used for multitier applications accessible from the World Wide Web and from an internal network. Multitier web applications of moderate complexity are segmented into three tiers. The first tier is made up of the presentation components that are accessible directly by end users. The second tier is composed of middleware components that execute the end usersââ¬â¢ requests. End users cannot access them directly. The third tier consists of data components. They are the most sensitive and are hosted by databases or directory servers. Firewall deployment is based on three strategies. The first strategy is the single firewall strategy, which is used to protect all the three tiers from the internet and internal network. All the communication going in and out of the three tiers goes through a single firewall. The firewall offers equal protection to all the servers but can subdivide the network into different subnets and offer different protectio n level to the subnets. Firewall in series strategy is whereby several firewalls are deployed to eliminate reliance on a single firewall. The firewalls are deployed one behind another and therefore the more sensitive tiers are behind more firewalls. For example, the data components tier would be behind both the firewall protecting it and the one protecting the middleware components and presentation components. The last strategy is the hybrid strategy, which uses only two firewalls. Either presentation servers and middleware servers or data servers and middleware servers are grouped together. Although two tiers are grouped together, they remain under dedicated subnets. In the first grouping, presentation servers and middleware servers are behind one firewall while data servers are behind two firewalls. All firewall arrangements are on the internal side of a router.Advertising Looking for essay on it? Let's see if we can help you! When connected out-of-band, it uses a hub, a spanning port or a network tap. Deploying both ISP and IDS is more beneficial and to do this, a router must be introduced. The IPS is connected on the external side of the router and the IDS is connected in internal side of the router either inline or out-of-band (Pappas, 2008). The IDS placed on the inside section of the edge router allows analyzing of communication within the internal network. The use of firewalls and IDPS is beneficial. Firewalls block network traffic that may be violating the security policy of an organization. Such traffic may include viruses, spam, email bombs and unwanted material. IDPS detect and stop malicious incidents that would compromise security of a given computer system. They can detect when an attacker has compromised the system and stop suspicious file transfers. By identifying reconnaissance activities, they can prevent e minent future attacks. Reference List Fithen, W.L., Allen, J.H. Stoner, E., (2008). Deploying firewalls. Software Engineering Institute. It is necessary to mark that the phenomenon of economics of scope must not be confused with the one of the economies of scale. Since the two phenomena concern the same sphere yet are composed of different elements, it is required to draw th e line between the two. According to the description provided by Parkin, Powell and Matthew (2007), ââ¬Å"a firm experiences economics of scale when an increase in its output of a good or service brings a decrease in the average total cost of producing itâ⬠(227). However, the authors mark that both the economics of scale and of scope ââ¬Å"can lead to natural monopolyâ⬠(Parkin, Powell and Matthew 2007, p.227). It is worth marking that Parkin, Powell and Matthew (2007) emphasize the importance of technological innovations for the economies of scale: ââ¬Å"In a period of rapid and fars In the given paper, such economics of scope are considered as the Xerox Company, the U.S. Telecommunications Industry, as well as the local exchange company and local operating company are considered. With the help of the analysis of their peculiarities and development, one can come to the conclusion concerning the companiesââ¬â¢ strategic operations, their tactics and the way the give n economies have utilized the new technologies that were at their disposal. However, it is important to mark the opportunities that each company had before the implementation of the technological changes. It is worth marking that Xerox Co. is one of the businesses that is developing rapidly and, hence, requires expanding, creating affiliates and managing them successfully. Speaking of the other sphere of economies of scope that are considered in the given paper, the one concerning the telecommunication issues, it is necessary to explain that in the given sphere, ââ¬Å"the existence of economies of scope remains an important but ambiguous issueâ⬠(Banker et al 1998, p.254). Therefore, differences in the development of the given companies predetermine the complexity of the analysis, making the latter considerably objective, though. Tracking the Progress: The Role of the Technologies It is worth mentioning that in the companies under the considerations, the technological, innovat ions introduced have played quite different roles despite such common feature as the fact that the companies in question both belong to the economies of scope and, hence, are supposed to develop according to a certain pattern.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Economies of Scope and the Modern Technology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that in the sphere of the U.S. telecommunications, the economies of scope are closely interconnected with the rapid progress of the U.S. telecommunications, yet there is no tangible connection between the two; as the authors claim, the given elements impact the same sphere of financial issues, yet the connection between the two is quite vague: ââ¬Å"Moreover,â⬠¦ the evidence cannot adequately disentangle the effects of two factors that both reduce unit costs ââ¬â economies of scale and technological advanceâ⬠(p.256). In contrast to t he given phenomenon, the economy of scale that Xerox Co. represents offers rather substantial reasons for implementing the strategy that economy of scale presupposes. Grounding their ideas and suggestions on the current state of the companyââ¬â¢s affairs, the managers come to the conclusion that the technological innovations that have been implemented so far require the change of the company course of n economy of scope, marking that the old model of operating the company does not suit the innovations in the sphere of technologies: ââ¬Å"In other cases, though, such a business model will not fit the circumstances of the technological or market opportunityâ⬠(p.2). Concerning the Course of Actions: Strategic Implications Analyzing the specific strategies that the given economies of scope utilize to achieve the maximum efficiency and decrease the costs that they suffer, one must mark that each of the given entrepreneurships has chosen it sown pace and model of development, wh ich calls for another comparison on the efficiency of the given approaches. Nevertheless, it is necessary to comment on the strategic implications themselves first. Observing the specifics of the strategic implications that the economies of scale presuppose for the given companies, one can come to the conclusion that with the help of the strategies chosen by the companies, a rapid increase in the revenues is about to occur.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Because of the improvement of the technological issues, the companies in question are able to process the queries and complete the tasks several times faster; in addition, the surge of the income and the decrease of the raw materials used for the production of the goods of the given companies allows the latter to develop further, thus, creating sufficient grounds for the future expansion, the international partnership and even the ââ¬Å"evolution of future industry structureâ⬠(Banker et al 1998, p.254). The Related Concepts: Discussing the Commercial Integrity Obviously, the issue of economies of scope and the technological innovations tat trigger the latter cannot be considered alone, since there is a number of factors dependent on the aforementioned economies, and, vice versa, the given corporations depend considerably on the issues intertwined with the problem of providing innovations in the sphere of economic and business. Crating the specific environment for the developme nt of the given ventures, one can claim with certainty that the success of the entrepreneurship follows immediately, which means that the elements of the environment that the companies in question operate in must be considered thoroughly. Introducing the peculiar details, one will be able to see the related concepts that contribute to building a successful business. Among the concepts of the kind, the commercial integrity takes the first place. As Chesbrough and Rosembloom (2002) say, ââ¬Å"some scholars conclude that firms may indeed develop the ability to manage new technological opportunities effectively if they invest in integrative capabilitiesâ⬠¦, ambidextrous internal processesâ⬠¦, or complementary assetsâ⬠(p.5), hence, emphasizing the necessity to create the commercial integrity of the economies in question. Hence, the integrity of the U.S. telecommunication companies cannot be doubted at the moment, which obviously leads to the prosperity of the latter, where as Xerox Corporation seems to have problems concerning the integrity of the company (Banker et al 1998), which triggers certain concerns for the company future. Hence, the integrity of the economies of scope is essential for the well-being of the latter. Conclusions: Economies of Scope: The Importance of Technologies Development Judging from the research conducted and the data obtained, one can come to the conclusion that in most cases, the transition to the development of economies of scope is predetermined by the necessity to implement certain technological changes and offer various innovations into the company. Therefore, the transition to the strategies of economies of scope can be considered a natural course of events for major companies like Xerox or the U.S. Telecommunications. With the help of the strategies that the acceptance of the economies of scope presupposes, Xerox and the U.S. Telecommunications can develop into larger corporations, keeping their integrity and creati ng the environment auspicious for further improvements and progress. Executive Summary In the modern world of economics, the aspect of technological innovations plays one of the major roles. Providing an efficient operation of companies, facilitating the work of the employees and simplifying the working process in general and certain operations in particular, the technological aspect is one of the prior issues in the sphere of economies of scope. Hence, the scale of the recent technological innovations, as well as their impact on the modern economies of scope, is to be considered. In addition, the general features of the modern examples of economies of scope are to be observed as well. Narrowing the research to featuring the peculiarities of several entrepreneurships, the strategies chosen by them, the tactics the businesses in question implement and the goals that they pursue, as well as analyzing the commercial integrity within the companies in question, one can come to certain co nclusions concerning the methods in which the modern economies of scope are operated and the issues that arise on certain stages of the development of the given economies. Hence, the general assessment of the current situation in the sphere of economies of scope can be conducted. With the help of the specific methods of research, precise data can be obtained, a thorough analysis can be conducted, and cohesive conclusions can be made. In the given paper, several companies that represent the economies of scope and utilize the correspondent elements their corporation strategy are going to be considered, their recent technological innovations are going to be enumerated, and the changes that have occurred in the given companies are going to be analyzed. It is important to mark that the given research focuses on the technological innovations used in the process of operating the economies of scope, and argues that for the economies of scope, the recent technological innovations can be cons idered as an efficient means of tackling certain entrepreneurship issues, namely, the ones concerning the efficiency of the company, the quality of the products and the efficiency of the staff. Therefore, the given paper claims that the current technologies are to be incorporated for an efficient implementation of the strategies of the economies of scope. In addition, the issues concerning the technological sphere are to be considered in the paper. Moreover, the social complexities are to be taken into account. Conducting an extensive observation of the given entrepreneurships, the paper offers profound conclusions. In simple words, funds to this program are contributed by the people who are presently working and are utilized for the benefit of the retirees. Ohlemacher (2010) states that Social Security is funded by a 6.2 percent payroll tax, paid by workers as well as employers. The Social Security corpus is being constantly used and is being replenished at the same time. Since inception, the Social Security program has done exceedingly well and has helped the country tide over many difficult situations. Till date, it remains one of the most successful and most popular programs in the United States which has touched the lives of millions of Americans. Vernon (2011) reveals that as of January 1, 2011, the Social Security trust fund stood at $2.6 trillion. At the end of 2010, close to 54 million people were beneficiaries of this program, while another 157 million peopl e had earnings covered by Social Security and paid payroll taxes. The outflow (expenditures) of the scheme stood at $713 billion while the total inflow (income) was $781 billion in 2010. Of this $664 billion was non-interest income while $117 billion was generated by way of interest. Inflation and Cost of Living Allowances There have been annual increases in Social Security benefits which try and counterbalance the adverse effects of inflation on fixed benefits. This indexing of Social Security benefits for inflation is of monumental importance because the absence of such indexing would result in the erosion of the purchasing power of the beneficiaries. Prices tend to rise over time and increase the cost of living. In such a scenario the beneficiaries would be able to purchase fewer goods and services unless the benefits rise in line with inflation. Known as Cost of Living Allowances (COLAs), these increases in Social Security benefits, based on the annual increase in consumer price s, have become an automatic annual feature of the program beginning 1975. Prior to that, such increases were accorded to the beneficiaries only when the Congress enacted a special legislation. The COLA adjustment is based on the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workà ers (CPI-W) over the last year. In periods of deflation where the CPI-W does not increase, no COLAs are announced. Change in Formula Recent reform proposals have called for changes in Social Securityââ¬â¢s cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) formula. It has been proposed that a new ââ¬Ëchained CPIââ¬â¢ be used instead of ââ¬ËCPI-Wââ¬â¢ that is being used at present. The chained CPI would take into account ââ¬Ësubstitution purchasesââ¬â¢ that consumers make to avoid high prices. Estimates reveal that the beneficiaries of Social Security would have to contend with smaller increases under the modified, chained CPI. Estimates reveal that the revised formula would res ult in a retiree receiving $560 less as benefits per year in the first decade. This loss in benefits would reach $984 in two decades from now. The aim of this study is to examine the implementation of human resource planning by the organizations. In order to achieve the organizational goals of labour requirements, the organization requires effective human resource planning. However, most of the organizations lack effective programmes on human resource planning to determine their recruitment and hiring practices. Therefore, human resource planning ensures the success of the organization by helping it to acquire the right labour force in the right numbers to match available jobs. However, some organizations fail to implement human resource planning for the following reasons; In order for the organization to have effective manpower planning, they must forecast the future demand for workforce. They can achieve this through trends analysis by studying the demand of some previous years and project the same in the future (Ree &à French, 2010). However, the demand and supply of labour is affected by economic conditions such as recession and boom periods. Such unpredictable economic conditions affect the capacity of the organizations to conduct effective resource planning (Kew &à Stredwick, 2010, p. 113). Organizations incur much expense to conduct human resource planning (Kew &à Stredwick, 2010). This is because almost all personnel must be involved in making a projection in order to achieve the reliable result. However, considering most organizations are small in size they cannot afford the cost of carrying out market research to obtain data for effective market trend analysis and predict the future demand for workforce. Instead of matching present and future labour requirements of organization, they acquire workers whenever the need arises and will downsize the workforce in case of fall in demand due to changes in pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-82432230512749391292020-01-26T19:52:00.001-08:002020-01-26T19:52:06.404-08:00The Causes And Effects Of Deforestation Sociology EssayThe Causes And Effects Of Deforestation Sociology Essay Laurance stated that Tropical forests do far more than sustain biodiversity; they are homes to indigenous peoples, pharmacopeias of natural products, and provide vital ecosystem services, such as flood amelioration and soil conservation (p. 109). This shows that forest is very important to us but deforestation has caused all the forest to be cleared. What is deforestation? Deforestation is an act of cutting down all the trees in that particular area. Deforestation happens for some reasons, some were done legally while some were done illegally. Tropical forest takes up about six percent of the whole earth but it causes a lot of problems when all the trees were cut down. Till today, peoples are still debating on whether deforestation is an appropriate act or not. What are the causes and effects of deforestation? What is happening to the tropical rainforest now? We have always read the news of Indonesia burning the forests almost every year. Why are they doing it? It has been reported they burn the forests so that they will have a better land to plant the palm oil. It acts as a fertilizer to the land because their plants died easily. Even thought they did it to fertilize the land but it brings harm to the people around the country. Air pollution happens especially in Malaysia where there are hazes everywhere. Haze is when the air is misty and blurry. It brings harm to the people that inhale it. Therefore, every year the rates of people receiving treatment during the period of time increases. This shows that deforestation has caused a lot of effects to the mankind and its been showed on advertisement and newspaper but it seems that people are still not aware of it. This research paper is going to talk about the causes and effects of deforestation around the world. Many people were more aware of the effects than the causes of deforestation. This research paper is going to talk about the causes and effects of deforestation. Besides the causes and effects, this paper is going to talk about what can be done to save the forest too. Causes of deforestation One of the most common causes of deforestation is clearing up the forest to pay back the foreign debt of that particular country (Culas, 2006). Some country has owed a large sum of foreign debt. They dont the capability to pay back the debt, thus they cleared up the forests for crop production. By planting crops that could be export to another country, they could earn a lot and repay back the debt. This is why most of the country chooses to clear the forest and do agriculture. They not only can repay back the debt but also earn a large sum of money out of it. If the country did not have that large sum of debt, the forest wouldnt have to be cleared up and the rates of deforestation will be decreasing. Therefore, those countries need to find another alternative ways that could earn money instead of clearing up the forests. As I mentioned earlier, tropical forests only takes up about 6 percent of the whole earth. If the countries continue to clear up the forests, there will be no more f orests in the surface of the earth. Another causes of deforestation are the demand of land. When the population of the certain countries increases, the demand of houses increases too. This leads to clearing up the forests to build houses so that they can sustain the population in that country. We dont have to look at other country. We just need to take a look at our own country, Malaysia. Forests in Setapak area were cleared up to build condominiums. Malaysia has the population over millions and the demand for houses were very high. They choose to clear up the forests so that there were more land to build apartment, condominium, terrace house and more. This shows that deforestation is the first option when it comes to fulfilling the demand of land. Besides fulfilling the demand of houses, the demand of oil has also leads to deforestation. Oil has been widely used everywhere in the world now. When the demand of oil is increasing, lands were in need for oil plantation. When there is no more empty land for oil plantation, deforestation has become the option again to have lands. Trees were chopped down and being used to plants oil palm so the demand could be met. Besides meeting the demand of land, the weakness shown in the governments rules is also one of the causes (Laurance, 1999). We learned from young that there are rules when it comes to cutting down the trees. Many people keep violating the rules and continue to do illegal logging. Why? This is because the weak governments policies. Rules were set but there were no enforcement. They show weakness when it comes to violating the rules. For example, they just let them go when they caught them doing illegal logging instead of arresting them or fine them. This does not help but makes the matter worse. People will think that it is fine to do illegal logging since the police did not arrest them at the first place. Such government will only promote the act instead of stopping them. Soon, all the trees in the country will disappear. The effects of deforestation What are the effects of deforestation? One of the effects of deforestation is doing harm to the indigenous people. When desertification happens, it deadly affects the indigenous people, as it contributes to death, illness, poorness, and culture shock (Mitten, 1997). This is because indigenous people live in the forest and their source of foods come from the forest. Logging activities have become one way to earn money. Therefore, all the companies have build their factory near the rivers. When they cut down the trees and bring it back the process, all the wastewater will flow into the river. Indigenous people drink water from the river. As a result, they will get sick because of the dirty water caused by the factories. It can even promote to death if it get serious. Besides that, the culture will soon vanished when the indigenous people becomes lesser and lesser. Cultural shock will happen and the history of the culture will soon be forgotten. Besides harming the indigenous people, deforestation harms the wildlife too (Bonaudo, Pendu, Faure, Quanz, 2005). This is because around 80 to 90 percent of animal species live in the tropical rainforest. Imagine if all the trees were cut down, what will happen to this animal? Of course, the animals will lose their natural habitat and they will extinct. Animals like panda refuse to breed when they are not in their own natural habitat. Therefore, the population if panda keeps increasing as time goes by because their natural habitat has been destroyed. When deforestation happens, the animals lost their natural habitat and also their protective shield. This results in difficulty to adapt to the new environment and refuse to breed. When this happen, more and more animals will extinct. Our future relationship will have to look at pictures to know the animal instead of looking at the animals in real life. How bad is it that for the future generation, animals are just picture for them? Def orestation will soon cause them to lost touch with the animals that exist now and they will only know them by story told by the parents or just going to a museum. Another effects of deforestation are climate change. Bala, Caldeira, Wickett, Phillips, Lobell, Delire, Mirin, (2006) stated that deforestation affects the global climate both by releasing the carbon stored in the living plants and soils, and by altering the physical properties of the planetary surface (p. 6550). This happens because trees are storage for the carbon dioxide released by the human through respiration. Trees stored carbon dioxide to make their own food through the photosynthesis process. When the trees were all cut down, there are no more trees to absorb carbon dioxide that are released by humans. Carbon dioxide will then release directly to the atmosphere and temperature will increase. When carbon dioxide in the air increases severely, the temperature will increase severely too. This will results in the phenomena named global warming. When global warming happens, ice in the North Pole and South Pole will melt. This results in the increasing of the sea level. The water will flood country that has lower sea level and they will disappear from the surface of the earth. Soon, all the land will be flooded and the country will disappear one by one. What can be done? Deforestation has caused a lot of harm to the mankind. To stop all this harm, we need to take some action to stop it. Instead of cutting down the trees to have new land, we can do land reclamation. Land reclamation is creating new lands from oceans or riverbeds. Besides that, government should enforce the rules instead of handling the matters with leniency. The people who violate the rules should be fined. This acts as a warning to the others so that they will stop they illegal logging and this could help in saving the trees around us. Every country should preserve their forests and also plant more trees so that the biodiversity could be maintained. Discussion All in all, deforestation has caused a lot of devastating effects not only to the people but also the animals. Before understanding the effects, we need to find the roots of why deforestation happens first. As I stated earlier, the causes of deforestation are large sum of foreign debt, increasing demand of land, and the weakness shown in the governments policies. Deforestation happens because the trees were cut down for crop production. With the production, they could repay back the debt. Besides that, the demand of land keep on increasing as times goes by. This is because the increase in popularity has increased the demand of land to build houses. Moreover, the weakness in the policies has promotes deforestation instead of curbing them. This happens because the government did not enforce the rules that were set and they take care of the matter leniently. Deforestation has done a lot of harm to people and also to wildlife. The most common effect is causing harm to indigenous people. Indigenous people live in the forest and everything they do inside the forest is part of their culture. When the trees were all chopped down, there are no more home for the indigenous people and soon their culture will extinct. The most precious things for a country are their original culture. If the indigenous people have extinct, they will be no more culture for that particular country. Another effect of deforestation is besides harming the indigenous people, deforestation harms wildlife too. Most of the animal species live in the tropical forest. Not only it acts as the natural habitat to the animals, forests also act as a protective shield for animals. When deforestation happens, they lost the natural habitat and protective shield. Soon, they will push to the edge of extinction. When this happen, it will cause the loss in biodiversity and our future ge neration will have to know the animals through picture. Another effect of deforestation is climate change. Trees act as storage for carbon dioxide that was released by the human through the process of respiration. Trees absorb carbon dioxide for their photosynthesis process. If the trees were cut down, all the carbon dioxide will be release straight to the atmosphere and this will cause the temperature to increase. When the temperature increase, global warming will happen and the ice in North Pole and South Pole will melt. This results in increase of sea level. Therefore, lands that have lower sea level will soon hit by flood and disappear from the surface of the earth. After understanding the causes and effects, what can be done to curb deforestation? Every government should find another alternative way to boost their economy and repay back the foreign debt. Instead of cutting down the trees for crop production, they can try boosting the economy by the tourism section. This way they can save the forest and earn money at the same thing. Besides cutting down trees for more land, land reclamation can become one of the ways to have more land. Filling the ocean and riverbed to create new lands instead of clearing the forest. This can fulfill the demand of land and preserve the forest at the same time. The government should enforce the rules that were set for logging activities. People who violate the rules by carrying out the illegal logging act will be fined. This acts as a warning to the others so that they do not dare to do it again. Besides having fined, government could come out with other ways of punishing the people that violates the rules. All i n all, they must enforce the laws and regulations on environmental issues. Conclusion I choose to do this research on deforestation is because I have read a lot of news on how deforestation do us harm and yet no one has done anything to stop it. I hope that this research paper could help the people to do understand more of the causes and effects of deforestation. Besides that, I also hope this research will help to curb deforestation and save the trees from being cut. By doing this, the biodiversity of the earth could be maintained and there are no more harm done to humans. If deforestation continues to happen, there will be no more trees in the future. This will results in high temperature, lost of biodiversity and more. Therefore I hope everybody will do his or her part in preserving and protecting the forest so that there is a better future for our next generation. pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-7121103565856133432020-01-18T16:16:00.001-08:002020-01-18T16:16:04.618-08:00Fast and Furious Movie Analysis EssayThis scene is the last scene of the movie. It takes place at the old home that the crew lived in when the first movie came out. The crew(Dom, Brian, Letty, Mia, roman, Tej, Han, and Brianââ¬â¢s child) are gathered together in the yard. Starting the scene Roman comes out of the house and tells Tej not to burn the barbeque again(implying that this wasnââ¬â¢t the first time it had happened, with Tej replying that he never burned it before. Then it the scene switches focus to Brian, Mia, and their son in which Brian explains that the houseââ¬â¢s air quality and traffic isnââ¬â¢t the best, but he thinks that he will learn to like it. Mia focuses on showing him the garage and explaining that it was the place where he could build his first car with daddy. A few moments after she said that, Dom responds ââ¬Å"First car better be a charger jackâ⬠, which Brian gave a confused look to and replied ââ¬Å"You mean a skylineâ⬠. Letty chuckles as Dom argues ââ¬Å"Like I said heââ¬â¢s a Torettoâ⬠(fact bring that Brianââ¬â¢s last name was Oââ¬â¢Connor). Oââ¬â¢Connor smiles back and responds ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re confusing the kidâ⬠, as Dom then asks Mia if she was going to let him get away with those words(even though all this was just playful, loving arguments). The focus goes to Han, Tej, and Roman as they discus Hans plan to move back to Tokyo, something he feels that he has to do because of the plans he made with his girlfriend, whom had died in the earlier scene. Tej wonders if he was really going to leave, and after Han confirms it, Tej says ââ¬Å"You know we got your back, whenever you need itâ⬠. The men nod to each other and seconds later Hobbs and Elena enter the scene, as Roman makes a joke and Hobbs retaliates. Hobbs, in his stiff posture, walks up to Toretto(Dom) and Oââ¬â¢Connor and openly expresses that they are now free of all their crimes. Excitement arises, ââ¬Å"Wasnââ¬â¢t half bad having you work for meâ⬠, says Hobbs. ââ¬Å"Now we all know you were working for me Hobbsâ⬠, Dom replies. Brian interferes says that they agree to disagree and thanks Hobbs for what he has done. As the men are gathered, Letty approaches Elena(Tej expressing to Roman that it must be an awkward encounter), and thanks her for everything she had done for Dom and her, then continues by implying that she was an amazing woman. As the two talk they go back and forth about Dom and end off on good terms, even though it was the first time they had met and they were both in love with the same man. Once again the scene switches to Hobbs and Dom, as they stand side by side. Dome takes a step forward(looking straight ahead past Hobbs) ââ¬Å"Not bad for a copâ⬠he says with a smirk. As Hobbs does the same he replies ââ¬Å"I never thought Iââ¬â¢d trust a criminalâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Till next timeâ⬠, they both say to one another and part ways. Hobbs gives Elena the sign to head out, but Dom stops her and explains ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t have to goâ⬠. Elena informs him that it was not her place, but that this was his home and her home was with the police force. She kisses him and walks away. The original crew mentioned in the beginning of the paper come together at the lunch table and laugh amongst each other, Dom asks Letty, ââ¬Å"Any of this feel familiar to you?â⬠, ââ¬Å"Noâ⬠¦ But it feels like homeâ⬠, she responds after taking a sip of her beer. The scene comes to an end as they say grace as a family. Scene 4 Concept: Primary Groups For this scene, the concept of a primary group will be applied. According to the book, Communicating In Groups:Application of Skills, Adams and Galanes define primary groups as ââ¬Å"groups formed to meet primary needs for inclusion and affectionâ⬠(Adams and Galanes). Although this type of group can be used for a work type situation, it is mostly connected to a close type relationship. Each member shows motives such as: love, caring, avoiding feelings of loneliness, sharing, feeling cared about. These are successful only when the members decide to let go of some freedom as individuals. A primary group can come in many different forms, such as friends, sororities, fraternities, etc. However, the group from fast and furious 6, demonstrate the main form of a primary group, a family(even though almost all of them are not blood related). For example, the way Brian and Dom argue about which car the Oââ¬â¢Connorââ¬â¢s son will first build, going back to their competitive spirit on what type of car was best. Although they were disagreeing with each other, their words were all out of love for the child and one another. Another example of this concept is the conversation between Han and Tej. Although Han individually wants to go out to Tokyo for himself, he has the support of his closest friends(the crew), and you know this when Tej say ââ¬Å"You know we got your back, whenever you need it.â⬠By saying this, it shows that they care for each other, which is an important factor to be a primary group(need to be caring). To become a primary group I had addressed that you must be willing to put away your individual desires. A prime example of this was the one on one discussion that occurred between Hobbs and Dom. Once again, Dom says ââ¬Å"Not bad for a cop, as Hobbs replies ââ¬Å"I never thought Iââ¬â¢d trust a criminal.â⬠The word trust in these few words is key. As a primary group, a family, you must trust one another and although neither of the two men had got along with each other in previous matters, they became somewhat close and finally put aside their individual attitudes to welcome each other in as one unit. According to Preserve Articles, there are some more points in being a primary group, two of which are physical proximity and identity of ends. Physical proximity is ââ¬Å"connected with the fusion of personalities within the groupâ⬠(Bhatt), which is exemplified as each of the members get together at the end at one table and enjoy a nice lunch together. This is a symbol of closeness within the characters. Identity of ends is ââ¬Å"connected with the fusion of personalities within the groupâ⬠(Bhatt). As this point of the article states, a primary group usually sees the world through the same Letty says ââ¬Å"Noâ⬠¦ But it feels like homeâ⬠. Letty had lost her memory, which is revealed in an earlier scene of the movie, but they way that she says everything feels like home implies that she was one of them, and that she also seen the world in a very similar, if not the same way as the others(identity of ends). This is the only scene in which the whole clip is based off of the group being a primary group rather than a secondary group. pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-62037621800703462892020-01-10T12:40:00.001-08:002020-01-10T12:40:03.514-08:00Week 5 Quizzes – Eco/Gm 561Week 5 Quizzes ECO/GM 561 Your Results for: ââ¬Å"Readiness Assessment Quizâ⬠Print this page Site Title:Economics UOP custom CW Book Title:UOP-custom course for Economics Book Author:Case Summary of Results 100% Correct of 7 Scored items: 7 Correct: 100% 0 Incorrect: 0% More information about scoring ________________________________________ 1. No es asesorà a legal. pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-8972425261391069182019-12-25T05:30:00.001-08:002019-12-25T05:30:04.433-08:00The Great Artists Of The Renaissance Period - 911 Words Two Great Artists of the Renaissance Period Michelangelo Buonarotti and Leonardo da Vinci, are considered the greatest and most influential artists of the High Renaissance. Both artists share various similarities and talent but had different beliefs. Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were amazing artists ahead of their time that inspired future generations of artists. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci or also known as Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in a farmhouse outside of the Italy. Around the age of 14, da Vinci became the apprentice of Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. He believed that science and art were connected and that studying both disciplines made him a better artist. Some of his famous works are the Mona Lisa, his Self-portrait in red chalk, The Last Supper, and Vitruvian Man. The publication is a significant document that the Internal Revenue Service has circulated in order to inform individuals about their rights as a taxpayer and it even highlights the steps that are followed by the IRS while it conducts an analysis of a taxpayer (Irs.gov, 2014). The publication came into existence because people were continuously complaining regarding the unethical as well as abusive behavior of the agents of IRS in relation to tax collection and the publication was revised during the month of September 2014 (Irs.gov, 2014). The first document containing the rights of the taxpayer was the Taxpayer Bill of Rights and was issued during 1988. Important provisions of the publication are the various rights of the taxpayers including the rights concerning privacy, confidentiality, representation, the value of service, right of information as well as right to challeng e the findings of the IRS. In order to avoid an audit by the IRS an individual needs to ensure that he/she has filed correct returns and be honest about them and use the method of e-filling in order to avoid errors. If an audit is conducted an individual should hire a tax lawyer and the individual should have a well-kept record of their earnings and spending and before entering the audit process they should learn each and everything about the audit to act in a professional manner. An effective audit rate is the percentage of individuals and businesses that the IRS had audited in a particular year. For example during the period of 2012 IRS audited 0.8 percent of partnership-based organizations (Rubin, 2014). An individual can make an appeal or challenge the audit within the first thirty days of the audit and this challenge is made directly to the IRS or they can challenge it in the court within the ninety days of the audit. pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-11727115147936874552019-12-08T22:01:00.001-08:002019-12-08T22:01:03.668-08:00Webquest free essay sample In the 1 sass fashion and clothing designers were beginning to rise to the top. Throughout Asian American literature there seems to be a struggle between the Asian culture and American culture. More specifically, there is a struggle between Asian women and their Asian American daughters, and what it means to be feminine, and how a woman should act. The main struggle is between how the American woman should act and how the Asian woman should act. However, the behavior of the Asian woman seems to be dominant through out the story because although the daughters and the mothers may not get along all of the time, the mothers to receive a lot of respect from their daughters. Therefore, the mothers opinion on how they should act, which is behaving like the Asian woman, is most evident. This is the case in The Joy Luck Club, written by Amy Tan and also in the short story "Waiting for Mr. Kim," written by Carol Roh-Spaulding. These two stories have very different meanings, however they are similar in the aspect that they are all Asian women with Asian American daughters trying to get their daughters to keep and use their Asian heritage. There are certain behaviors that Asian women are expected to have, and the mothers feel that their daughters should use these behaviors. In The Joy Luck Club, the novel traces the fate of the four mothers-Suyuan Woo, An-mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, and Ying-ying St. Clair-and their four daughters-June Woo, Rose Hsu Jordan, Waverly Jong, and Lena St. Clair. Through the experiences that these characters go through, they become women. The mothers all fled China in the 1940's and they all retain much of their heritage. Their heritage focuses on what is means to be a female, but more importantly what it means to be an Asian female. In the short story "Waiting for Mr. Kim," the main female character Gracie understands what it means to be an Asian female, but she does question the meaning because of her sisters. Her sisters ran away from home before their marriage could be arranged and eloped. This is totally against Asian culture, and it causes Gracie to question her heritage and her Asian femininity. In both of these stories there are certain characteristics of females that are the same, they are inner strength, obedience, honor and respect, the good of the whole is better than the good of the individual, and finding things out for yourself. In the chapter "Scar" the characteristic of honor and respect is first noticed. In this chapter An-mei finds out how her mother basically deserted her, her mother did leave for a good reason, which was to maintain the honor of her family, but either way her mother left her. Her grandmother had to raise her, and she learned much about the Asian woman from her. An-mei was showing some disrespect towards on of her aunts, and her aunt told her that she was being disrespectful. Her grandmother then interjected and said, "When you lose your face, An-mei...it is like dropping your necklace down a well. The only way you can get it back is to fall in after it." She was talking about A-mei's mother, and how she left because she had disrespected the family and she was dishonorable to the family name. The only way for her mother to regain respect and honor was to leave and do it on her own, which is a characteristic of an Asian woman. Another feminine characteristic that comes from that scene is being able to do things on your own. However, this is an American influence. This characteristic comes from the chapter "Rules of the Game." This is a peculiar chapter in the book because it is a chapter where the woman is not seen as inferior to the man. Waverly's brother, Vincent, received a chess set for Christmas. However, Waverly is the one who took full use of the chess set. She was a natural, she would beat her brothers in chess, which would normally be looked down upon in Asian culture, but she was encouraged. She was even given lessons in chess, and she was a national champion. Unlike An-mei's mother, Waverly was bringing honor to the family name. When Waverly is encouraged to excel in chess she learns something from her mother. Her mother said in her broken English, "This American rules...Every time people come out from a foreign country, must know rules. You not know, judge pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-32097811715447914402019-11-26T15:05:00.001-08:002019-11-26T15:05:04.332-08:00Adversity in Film and Literature EssaysAdversity in Film and Literature Essays Adversity in Film and Literature Essay Adversity in Film and Literature Essay As William Arthur Ward once said, ââ¬Å"Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.â⬠Adversity is defined as a difficult situation of misfortune or tragedy (Merriam- Webster.) In ââ¬Å"Lamb to the Slaughterâ⬠by Roald Dahl, Mary Maloney is faced with misfortune when her husband decides to leave her and her unborn baby, resulting in her murdering him.At Prince Prosperoââ¬â¢s party in the short story ââ¬Å"The Masque of Red Deathââ¬â¢ by Edgar Allen Poe, adversity and death find him and his guests. In Shakespeares play, Othello, Othello is convinced by Iago that his wife is a cheating on him with another man. In William Broyles Jr.ââ¬â¢s Castaway, Chuck Noland crash lands on a deserted island and is left alone with his thoughts and volleyball named Wilson. Throughout Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack battle for complete power over each other and the island theyââ¬â¢ve been stranded on. As Elie is living through the Holocaust , he is conflicted with the idea of leaving or staying by his fatherââ¬â¢s side in Elie Wieselââ¬â¢s Night. All of these sources show that through adversity, a personââ¬â¢s true character is brought to light. Itââ¬â¢s also seen in contrasting patterns of foolishness and determination. When faced with adversity, one often exhibits foolish behavior. When Mary Maloneys husband announces that he is leaving her, she foolishly acts out of rage and murders him. Her life revolved around her husband and when the source of her adversity rooted from him it created a mix of emotions that she couldnt handle. It is clear that she was loyal and loved her husband, so for her to kill him was only a lapse of good judgement. This lapse of judgement reveals that she makes poor decisions in times of misfortune.Similar to Mary, Prince Prosperoin Edgar Allen Poes The Masque of Red Death, also makes foolish choices. His efforts of seeking peace and health from behind his walls are pointless in that death still manage pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-75945984653424565552019-11-22T22:28:00.001-08:002019-11-22T22:28:03.692-08:00Understand the Philosophical Theories of Nominalism and RealismUnderstand the Philosophical Theories of Nominalism and Realism Nominalism and realism are the two most distinguished positions in western metaphysics dealing with the fundamental structure of reality. According to realists, all entities can be grouped into two categories: particulars and universals. Nominalists instead argue that there are only particulars.à How Do Realists Understand Reality? Realists postulate the existence of two kinds of entities, particulars, and universals. Particulars resemble each other because they share universals; for example, each particular dog has four legs, can bark, and has a tail.à Universals can also resemble each other by sharing other universals; for example, wisdom and generosity resemble each other in that they are both virtues.à Plato and Aristotle were among the most famous realists. The intuitive plausibility of realism is evident. Realism allows us to take seriously the subject-predicate structure of discourse through which we represent the world. When we say that Socrates is wise it is because there are both Socrates (the particular) and wisdom (the universal) and the particular exemplifies the universal. Realism also can explain the use we often make of abstract reference. Sometimes qualities are subjects of our discourse, as when weà say that wisdom is a virtue or that red is a color. The realist can interpret these discourses as asserting that there is a universal (wisdom; red) that exemplifies another universal (virtue; color). How Do Nominalists Understand Reality? Nominalists offer a radical definition of reality: there are no universals, only particulars. The basic idea is that the world is made exclusively from particulars and the universals are of our own making. They stem from our representational system (the way we think about the world) or from our language (the way we speak of the world). Because of this, nominalism is clearly tied in a close manner also to epistemologyà (the study of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion). If there are only particulars, then there is no virtue, apples, or genders. There are, instead, human conventions that tend to group objects or ideas into categories. Virtue exists only because we say it does: not because there is a universal abstraction of virtue. Apples only exist as a particular type of fruit because we as humans have categorized a group of particular fruits in a particular way. Maleness and femaleness, as well, exist only in human thought and language. The most distinguished nominalists include Medieval philosophers William of Ockham (1288-1348) and John Buridan (1300-1358) as well as contemporary philosopher Willard van Orman Quine. Problems for Nominalism and Realism The debate between supporters of those two opposed camps spurred some of the most puzzling problems in metaphysics, such as the puzzle of the ship of Theseus, the puzzle of the 1001 cats, and the so-called problem of exemplification (that is, the problem of how particulars and universals can be related to each other).à Its puzzles like these which render the debate regarding the fundamental categories of metaphysics so challenging and fascinating. pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-37295275370291680312019-11-21T03:29:00.001-08:002019-11-21T03:29:03.603-08:00Vietnam- China Conflict Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 wordsVietnam- China Conflict - Research Paper Example The two countries have been characterized by a longstanding rivalry between regional powers. The opposition has been diminishing and at the same time escalating in different periods. The conflict has also escalated to the 21st century where the two countries have been in turmoil over the fishing territories. The continued suspicion on a number of issues is expected to escalate further in the future if issues are not addressed regionally and globally. The conflict has affected the region and world in different ways. This paper seeks to focus on Vietnam- China Conflict. Origin: Why Chinese Claim that it is Their Land or Area China continues to claim that the Paracels and Spratly islands are parts of the territory. This claim traces backs to the Yuan Dynasty in 1279. This was the period when astronomer Guo Shoujing visited the area. The original claim of the area was done by Jiang Jieshi Kuomintang government (Sieff; 1). Since then, the Peopleââ¬â¢s Republic of China has followed the claim. The greatest Chinese sailors also named the islands in Chinese language and explorers as early as 1430 (Sieff; 1). Conflict The issue of the border has not been a direct source of conflict between the two territories. However, increased political involvement led to increased tension and conflict. Most of the tension has revolved around the border. Both of the countries share 700 miles of common border. This boundary was delineated by Sino-French treaties signed during the colonial period (Hung 1979; 1039). However, there were differences over the actual sites of boundary mark. This suspicion heightened as the relationship between the two countries became tense in 1978. This was due to mishandling of overseas Chinese in Vietnam (SinoVietnameseWar; 2013). At the time of war, both sides of the country tried to change the location of the stone pillars marking their sides. The other cause of tension was the division of territorial jurisdiction in the Gulf of Tonkin area. The reas on behind this strain was sufficient deposits of oil in the South China Sea. Both of the countries also claimed ownership to the Paracels and Spratly islands. In 1974, china took one of the islands after a small stint with South Vietnamese army. On the other hand, South Vietnamese laid claim of the Spartly islands. The conflict heightened as China withdrew its support. This led to collapse of financial and economic programs of these nations. These nations responded through retaliation mechanisms. This was through the management of overseas Chinese people. Consequently, the Vietnamese government decided to regulate private business managed by Chinese. There was also seizure of private properties, currency exchange, and sending people to new economic zones (Hung 1979; 1043). This affected the overseas Chinese significantly. Others were forced to abandon new economic zones, and other moved to other parts of Asian nations. This caused China to move due to mistreatment of her people. Chi na also cancelled other key projects it was financing to Vietnamese. Consequently, most of the refugees remained stranded along the border. This heightened the border tension. China viewed this outcome as a soviet conspiracy to incite china. The soaring dispute was also heightened by the Cambodia connection. This was due to the soaring diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia. However, china began to side with Cambodia. Initially, china was reluctant to join the war. However, after the pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3951707672503830324.post-76064457071339687182019-11-19T13:18:00.001-08:002019-11-19T13:18:03.666-08:00Three Summries of three Articles about Husky Energy Inc EssayThree Summries of three Articles about Husky Energy Inc - Essay Example Despite unpredictable interruptions in Ohio refinery reducing the production rates, Husky net income rose at an average of $50 million from previous year. Hedge funds are similar to mutual funds in that money is pooled from investors and then invested in selected financial instruments in order to gain a positive return. Hedge funds however are not monitored by the Securities and Exchange Commission since the securities they issue are considered as private offerings. In order to get the maximum return for their investors, hedge funds often employ strategies like investing in ventures that have high risk. One way of doing this is through derivatives. Derivatives are financial instruments that gets if values from the value of a particular underlying asset like bonds, exchange rates and commercial real estate loans. Another way that hedge funds obtain good returns is by employing the strategy of arbitrage. This is actually just exploiting the pricing inefficiencies with respect to certain related assets. A hedge fund for example can buy shares of a company from one exchange and then sell them to another which ensures profit. Aside from the strategies it implements, hedge funds typically face large risks themselves. This is because hedge funds are highly leveraged. Hedge funds borrow money that is greater than what was originally invested. It is not unusual therefore for a hedge fund to borrow $20 for every $5 that it gets from an investor. So how does all this fit in the recent crisis faced by the financial market? In order to answer that, one has to look at how subprime lending works. The basic premise of subprime lending is to provide loans to people who are not qualified to obtain them in the first place. These borrowers did not qualify due to some factors like credit history and income level, to name a few. In the past, when banks loaned money, it was the one who faced the possibility of default termed as a credit risk. Current practices in the financial market however have allowed banks to sell these mortgage payments as well as the credit risk involved to investors. This method is known as securitization. As a result, instead of having to face the credit risk alone, banks are now able to ââ¬Å"spreadâ⬠these risks to a large number of investors. The problem arose when lenders, who had initially obtained loans on the idea that they would be able to refinance them on more favorable terms, were now faced with higher interest rates. Consequently, prices of real estate dropped which lead to foreclosures and defaults. As a result, banks and other financial institutions were faced with losses leading to the financial crisis. Now as the banks continued to distribute the credit risks, these investment were considered high risk and high yield. Which of course made them lucrative for hedge funds. Thus as the risks related to these securities increased, it made them more viable to be placed with investors that had high leverage. Hedge funds became a likely source of investors since being unregulated, they had no need for capital requirements. Thus when these funds were unable to sell the subprime mortagages, especially since they were hoping to only hold it for a short time, they went out of business which actually contributed to the crisis. To get a better picture, let us look at two strategies employed by hedge funds already mentioned earlier. First is derivatives, particularly credit default swaps. Credit default swaps, or CDS as they are often called, are insurance contracts that are used to protect bondholders in the likelihood of default. CDS are considered as two-party contracts since a company that incurs a loss will be able to gain a profit somewhere else ensuring that there is no actual loss. Recent market practices however have allowed CDS to be used either speculatively or even as insurance to a specific credit risk. The problem thus arose when there was uncertainty as to who would pay for these losses. Such was the case with Lehman Brothers. Hedge funds, which are highly leveraged to start with, put investments in Lehman. It is possible that due to these investments, Lehman was also able to invest in CDS. When Lehman was unable to sell its CDS, it was eventually forced to file for bankruptcy. Another practice of hedge funds that could have contributed to the crisis is securitization. The market practice of allowing securitization also allowed the banks to put the debt that is associated with these same securities into SIVs or structured investment vehicles. SIVs are considered as entities that are in off-balance sheets. Because of these status, the increase in risk meant and increase in yield. Hedge funds therefore were drawn to these since by not being in the books, the requirement for capital reserve was circumvented. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan is even quoted to have said that it was the securitization and not the loan that was the cause of the crisis. While we can conclude that hedge funds contributed to the current financial crisis, they are not the sole factor and possibly not the originator. Hedge funds by themselves also have positive impacts on the market. Because of their strategy of having arbitrage, they are actually helping reduce or even eliminate the mispricing that is currently prevalent in the markets. Despite being highly leveraged, hedge funds can actually provide the needed liquidity for companies. This was seen when the hedge fund Cerberus bought the ailing Chrysler company allowing for jobs to be saved. The practice of hedge funds investing in high risk investment have become a good source of risk transfer as well as diversification. While the crisis may not signal the end of hedge funds, only time will tell if they are truly a help to the market or a mistake. References: U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission. His response to each voyage differ as do his ideas and reactions to the environment in which he is residing. Gulliver begins his expeditions with a very social and open behavior while possessing a general acceptance of any newly encountered beings. But by the end of the fourth voyage, Gulliver leans toward a more anti-social attitude which was derived from the hatred and disgust he has for human beings, the “Yahoos.'; à à à à à As for the first voyage to Lilliput, Gulliver acts very sociable with all of the different creatures he comes in contact with. Once he arrives on the unknown island, he begins to explore the land around him. After being brought into the city, Gulliver remains subservient towards the Lilliputians by staying chained up near his hut without acting out and attempting to break free which would have most likely been a successful attempt. This subservience created enough trust of the “Man-Mountain'; by the Lilliputian king that it was declared that his liberty hath been granted when he could have easily crushed and killed these little people. Gulliver is also very eager to be able to interact with the creatures and this is evident when in a few weeks he “made a great progress in learning their language'; (68). He is also quite helpful and there are two definitive cases of Gulliver displaying this helpfulness in the country of Lilliput. The first occurs when he obeys the orders of the king to destroy his opposition’s navy and ends up stringing up the navy of Blefuscu rendering them helpless. Then he saves the fiery palace by relieving himself onto it, extinguishing the flames. As you can see throughout the first voyage, Gulliver was very sociable and friendly to those he came in contact with. à à à à à An anti-social behavior is then exhibited near the end of the last voyage, after he leaves the country of the Houyhnhnms, because of his new found disgust and hatred for the rest of the world especially the “Yahoos.'; This is evident almost immediately when Gulliver first encounters natives on the new island. Unlike previous encounters with new people, he “made what haste [he] could to the shore'; to quickly retreat from an impromptu meeting (333). His sole purpose after leaving the Houyhnhnm land was “to discover some small island uninhabited, yet sufficient by [his] labour to furnish [himself] with the necessaries of life, which [he] would have thought a greater happiness than to be first Minister in the politest Court of pamelaperry189http://www.blogger.com/profile/03431892583130945597noreply@blogger.com0
